Amsterdam Historical Museum – Van Speijk monument.

To Jan Carel Josephus van Speijk 2nd Sea Lieutenant. Knight of the Military Order of William 4th class. Born in Amsterdam 31st of January 1802. Taken up into this institution (civic orphanage, R.V.) on the 5th of February 1813. And joined out of his own free will the national sea service on the 21st of January 1820. As commanding officer on countries gun-boat No. 2 attacked in front of Antwerp by insurgent Belgians he ignited to save the honor of the Dutch flag a fire in the gunpowder and died a heroic death the third of February 1831.
