Charles Hoffbauer – In the Restaurant (1907). Painting which is part of the current exhibit Impressionism: Sensation & Inspiration at the Amsterdam Hermitage. Just for this work alone it is worth visiting the exhibition – the painting reminded me especially of the work of ‘precisionist’ Hopper, the same figuration, the same subject matter, both American as well and of Edward Hopper is also known that he in particular studied Manet intensively during his stay in Paris – but also as regards the other masterpieces, the broader cultural and artistic context in which Impressionism is placed and interpreted, make the exhibition title not an exaggerated description …

Impressionism: Sensation & Inspiration will run until January 27, 2013.
