In the entrance hall of the Amsterdam center The New Love – a place for debate, religion, poetry and more – hangs this impressive painting (Size: 630 x 220 cm. Medium: sand, acrylic and enamel paint on canvas on wood panels) by the Dutch, Berlin based, artist Tjebbe Beekman. Depicted: the Media Markt. Inspiration: The Capsular Civilization – On the City in the Age of Fear, a collection of essays written by the cultural philosopher Lieven de Cauter. The interesting thing about Mall IV is the contrast Beekman makes here between the subject matter of ‘gated community’ on the one hand and on the other hand the form that can be described as collage – broken – chaotic – apocalyptic …
